I Forgot …

Yesterday I was in a bit of a rut.  I’m not really sure why, but going for a run didn’t sound fun.  Yes, it even happens to a shamelessly happy runner like myself.  In an effort get back here:

I started reading my fav NYC runner’s blogs.  This post from Ashley reminded me … Aint NO run like a new playlist run!

Typically when I’m marathon training I’m either running with others, or trying not to get too attached to my ipod.  I believe that for marathon training, especially when doing a long run music is best used in moderation.  Why?  Well, if you are like me, an especially awesome song really gets you moving … and subsequently uses more energy.  Lets call it the “Pump up Factor”.  On a long run when you should be carefully managing your energy output, this “Pump up Factor” can be detrimental.

However, yesterday the “Pump up Factor” was exactly what I needed.

I am not very cool when it comes to music, I mostly rely on VC or my infinitely cooler brother but for this playlist Ashley’s recommendations really helped.  Judgement free zone, here it is:

Oh yeah, Wreckx-N-Effect, no playlist is complete without a little throwback.

1 hour long, perfect for some speed drills that I had planned.  I set out with a goal of doing 1 mile warm up, 1 mile @ GOAL PACE of 8:24 (1/4 Mile Recovery), 1 Mile @ 10KPACE of 7:57 (1/4 Mile Recovery), 4 x 1/4 Mile @ 5KPACE of 7:47 (1/4 Mile Recovery), 1 mile cooldown.

And then I started running and I felt it … the “Pump up Factor”.  I had forgotten how great it feels to run fast while listening to awesome music!  I ended up running how I felt and this was the result:

7:45!!  Yay.  Thank you Adele, I did set Fire to the Rain … and it was a BLAST!

I now have a fitness goal to run 6 miles at a sub 8 minute pace.

What about you?  Do you run with music?  Any songs that I just HAVE to put on this playlist?

I HAVE to listen to music…it’s the only way to get through the run! I usually use songs to time my runs th0ugh…probably a bad idea…but like I won’t allow myself to look at my pace or time until a certain number of songs have played. It’s sort of a mental game for myself, too.

I totally agree with music in moderation during training. There is something about keeping that focus and letting your body find that natural rhythm. With that being said, I love when a great, pump-you-up song comes on during a leisure run! Nice work!!!

When I started running about a year ago, I HAD to have music. I’ve since weeded off of it and I run with music 50% of the time. Music definitely helps with my speed work though, motivating and gives me something to focus on besides my pace!

Glad you’re out of your rut! That was quick!

I run with music if running solo! I listen to a lot of GLEE and Taylor Swift…not sure if that is up your alley!

  5. I don’t know if you’d be into it, but some latin music has a really good beat like Wisin y Yandel. I find them great for running.

I run with music the majority of time I run, even long runs. I kind of put the power songs on when I need them later in the run (1hour plus). I often think I would prefer a good song to a glass of water in a race! (Luckily i can have both)
