epsom salts for runners

Epsom Salt Soaks

Magnesium Sulfate … Better known as Epsom Salts are a bit of a fall back plan in my world.  They are the “Its too darn cold to take an ice bath” recovery alternative.

This evening as I sank down in a lovely warm Epsom Salt bath and felt my tension and aches melt away, I began to wonder why Epson is the step-child of my recovery.  Maybe they should be given a bigger role?

According to the Epsom Salt Council the benefits are substantial.  Here are a few that I thought were incredibly relevant for runners and athletes:

  • Ease stress and improves sleep and concentration – Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body.
  • Help muscles and nerves function properly
  • Reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
  • Improve oxygen use
  • Flush toxins
  • Improve absorption of nutrients
However what I found really fascinating was the benefits of Epsom Salts in easing digestive issues,  Apparently in addition to increasing your magnesium levels, Epsom Salts also deliver sulfates, which are hard to get through food but easily absorbed through the skin
  • Sulfates play a vital role in the formation of mucin proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract.  These mucin proteins line the gut and lubricate it for the passage of food.
  • Sulfates stimulate the pancreas to generate digestive enzymes
  • Help detoxify the body’s residue of medicines and environmental contaminants.
If there is one thing I know about runners, its that 97% of us have some sort of digestive issue.  Man I love me some multi-tasking.

  2. Wonderful for your skin too! Try mixing it with your cream facewash, or dissolving it in water and using it as a mask. My skin is softer, more even, and it even helps with acne!

  3. I’ve never taken an Epsom salt bath just because I don’t know exactly how to do it. Do you just pour the Epsom salts into hot water? How much for a bath? How long do you soak, and do you put your whole body in or just your feet/the part that’s hurting? (Maybe there are directions on the package and I just don’ t know because I’ve never bought any?)

    1. 2 cups of the salts in a warm bath, sink down and enjoy!! I usually immerse my entire self in it just because I’m sore from head to toe! Try it … It’s delightful!

  4. One of my dogs accidently tore his nail completely out. The vet had me soak his paw in Epsom salts for a few days to help the healing (which it did!). While i was soaking his paw i read the package and thought why the heck arent i doing this for me?? I have a 9 mile run coming up this saturday and you can bet i’m going to be using those salts. Move over Piglet! Mommy is jumping in too!!

    I also read you can drink it but that scares me a bit. ew.
