We left from NYC at 5:30 am to make our flight to San Jose Costa Rica. After a 5 hour flight we were waiting in the San Jose airport for our transfer to a smaller jet port to catch our connecting flight to Arenal. Arenal is actually the name of the Volcano located in the La Fortuna area. An active volcano which erupted last in 1968, Arenal is one of the 10 active volcanos in the world.
What happened next was my first experience in a prop job airplane. 10 seats, no bathrooms and a cloudy storm sky = my worst nightmare. Thankfully it was only a 20 minute flight, and the kids were totally fine with it. In fact G2 slept through the whole thing.
all smiles – before the turbulance
Once in Arenal it was a short drive to our destination – Tabacon Resort
A little bit about Tabacon …
full credit to my sister in law for that beautiful write up
Day 1: Rest day, and after early travel I was pretty thrilled with the ability to just soak in hot springs.
Day 2: I chose to do my 60 minute run on the treadmill. Mostly because it was convenient but also because it is extremely hilly in Arenal and my legs were sore from the 3-2-1 workout I did a few days ago! I did 11k or 6.8 miles in around 55 mins. I threw in some 1km repeats because I was a bit bored on the treadmill.
Travel Tip: treadmills in many other countries will be in KM rather than Miles. Use this chart to convert the speeds so that you know what to set your treadmill to

Day 3: Costa Rica adventure on foot. I woke up bright and early to run the streets of Arenal. It was awesome!
We are basically staying at the base of a volcano and the hills were steep, the roads were windy but I was not the only runner out there. The streets were busy with runners. I always feel so much safer when I know that the locals run the roads that I am out on.
Travel Tip: Ask your hotel for advice on where to run, but remember to give them a distance that you want to run. Many people will assume that you just want to run a mile or so, and they will direct you to run around the hotel property. BUT if you tell them that you are looking to venture out, they will tell you where the locals run.
We are onto Manuel Antonio next! See you in a few days for another fitness travel update
