Running in Mauritius

Well folks here is another edition of Gia the crazy travel runner …

Mauritius is an up and coming adventure travel destination.  Apparently running is a sport that the Mauritians take part in, as there are actually 2 marathons annually on the island.  However I did not see many other runners.  But did that stop me from being that crazy foreigner running through the sugar cane fields?  Nope …

Running in Mauritius

First things first, safety.  I did some extensive conversing with the locals about the safely of the island before heading out on my adventure.  The outstanding consensus was that I had nothing to worry about.  Did I feel safe while running?  Yes, Mostly.  Being a city runner I am not too accustomed to being the only runner on the roads, but being solo on the roads is not something that is specific to Mauritius it could have happened in a US suburban area as well.

I was told that the heat is strong and that I should try to run before 8 am.  While that was probably the correct advice, I also felt that later in the morning there were more people around which made me feel more comfortable so I went around 8:30 am.

The first day I ran 10 km total – around 6.2 miles.  I did a little out and back to a small and private beach

found myself a nice hill and did some repeats.  It was hot, I was absolutely a minority, but as always it was a beautiful way to see the island.

The next day I found a section of the road leading up to the resort that was exactly a km and used it to do km repeats.  Again I was alone on the road and when I got back to the resort nearly the entree staff asked me if I was training for the Olympics!! Ha.  I was tempted to say yes as they were horrified that I would subject myself to running fast in the heat for fun?!

Its hilarious to me that running while on vacation can be such a foreign concept to many people … but then again relaxing while on vacation is something I am terrible at, so to each their own 🙂

Where is the craziest place you have run?  Do you run on empty streets or busy ones?
